There are many things I recommend people to do to find success and "be lucky" but there is one particular strategy I would never have been able to succeed without; taking risks. I can be quite impulsive and I actually like and enjoy risk so my personal problem is reeling it in. However many people are scared of risk, frightened of making mistakes so they work quite hard just to maintain the normal state of their life. Change is a scary thing to a lot of us even if that change might bring new success and fortune; the risk that it could all go wrong is there so we keep things as they are.
There is a saying in England "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", well there is something to be said for that but if we all lived by that philosophy we would still all be living in caves and cooking on an open fire. Taking risks is what propels mankind forward and in particular the individuals that took the risks. Those that crossed the Atlantic and started a new life in the Americas a few hundred years ago took massive risks; the journey was tough and some didn't make it but the rewards of a new free world and a new society that would change this planet forever were incredible.
Taking stupid risks and gambles is not what I am suggesting here, what I am suggesting is taking calculated risks. A lot of us come up with new ideas all the time, maybe a new job or business or relocating to setup a new and exciting life somewhere different. We might even look into some of the ways this could be done but we often just leave it as a dream, something we might do one day. We forget how short life is and we think there will always be another day when actually today might be the only day. Sometimes to build up the courage to build a better future for ourselves and those around us is to contemplate no tomorrow and how short life can be. I am not trying to be morbid I am trying to say the opposite; life is wonderful, if you let it be. Do what you love because life is too short not to. Don't go mental just take those calculated risks that you already started looking into and thinking about.
It's easy to take risks and gambles when you have little to lose and I know that very well because I took my first big risks and chances in life when I was living in a hostel for homeless teenagers. I had very little to lose and I took some huge risks early on in my adult life that created some huge success for me. Later in my life when I need to take some new chances and calculated risks I was scared to and held back but I realized that if I didn't I would only ever be maintaining the position I had reached, I would never do any better. As soon as I pushed myself to take new risks and challenges my life took off again. If you think you have something to lose, take a really good look at your life and ask yourself if this is really what you wanted because if it's not then you will need to face the new risks and challenges, chase your dreams or you face the prospect of next year and the year after being exactly where you are now only a few years older.
When you take risks, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but in my opinion if you don't take the risks at all, you are always losing. To be in with a chance of winning you have to play the game.

Matt Kinsella is the author of How To Be Lucky, a book about how Matt came from a teenage homeless hostel to become a successful entrepreneur and his guide to how others can do something similar. How To Be Lucky is not about chance or the kind of luck you need to win the lottery it's about making your own luck. The philosophies and techniques Matt discovered that helped him turn his life around changed his life so much he saw no reason why he could not document them along with his story and turn them into his book How To Be Lucky, to help people achieve great success from nothing in the same way he did.
